Emergency

Emergency communication is one of the purposes of the amateur radio service. The basics, so you’re ready when it counts.

MAYDAY
Distress signal on voice
··· −−− ···
SOS, distress signal on CW

The rules

  1. Only when life or property is in danger. Otherwise never SOS or MAYDAY.
  2. Priority. If you hear emergency traffic on a repeater, leave the frequency to it and stay available.
  3. Through Civil Protection. In an operation, you help with your station only if you are enrolled in ΠΣΕΑ, the Civil Protection scheme.
  4. Who for. Any competent state agency that asks, e.g. in earthquakes and floods.
  5. Always with your callsign. Never a false callsign or unverified news, least of all in a crisis.
